Sam Dougados is a French visual artist, a pioneer of “beach art”. His work combines nature, geometry, poetry, and ecological commitment, in an approach that is both aesthetic and spiritual. His work, both discreet and monumental, invites us to slow down and experience the moment.

Born in Strasbourg, Sam Dougados settled on the Basque coast, in Biarritz, where he has lived for over 17 years. Self-taught, he did not follow any classical art training. From adolescence, he sought to express his emotions through poetry, then painting, sculpture, and installations.
In 2007, a layoff and a breakup marked a turning point: he decided to live for art. Discovering beach art through a surf video, he was fascinated by the grandeur and transience of this practice. He started in 2008, becoming the first French artist to make sand his studio.
Beach Art: a Dialogue between Man and Sea
Beach art consists of drawing directly on the sand, with a rake and sometimes a string line, vast ephemeral frescoes visible from above. Each work must be created during low tide, before d “being erased by the waves. This temporary nature gives the” work a meditative power: art as a tribute to the present moment.
Sam systematically photographs his creations, transforming each fresco into a lasting trace. He has created works on the beaches of 11 countries, adapting his motifs to the shapes of the coastline, to rocks, or drawing inspiration from local cultures (azulejos, zelliges…).
Dougados’ artistic signature is based on poetic geometry, a symbiosis with the elements, and great spontaneity. His influences range from land art to street art, including contemporary art, but his primary muse remains nature.
His work conveys a strong ecological message: the impermanence of things, the fragile beauty of the world, the call to slow down and observe. His art becomes a contemplative act, a moment of reconnection with the essential.
Winner of the Bayonne Young Talents Trophy in 2003, Sam Dougados regularly exhibits in France and abroad, in festivals, galleries, or artistic events. In 2019, he created a spectacular work on Biarritz beach: the giant portrait of the seven G7 presidents, visible only from the air.
He also collaborates with artisans (jewelers, printers), and explores new techniques such as cyanotype or aluminum printing, always seeking to renew his artistic language.

Personal Life and Philosophy of the Moment
A surfer and underwater hunter, Sam lives in rhythm with nature. He considers it not only as a backdrop, but as a partner, or even a medium. His art, he says, is a way to “stop, to savor the poetry of the moment, to become a conscious contemplator”.
This philosophy is found in all his creations, whether they are made on a beach, in a gallery, or in the heart of a park.
“I NEED” at Château D’Arsac: a Sculptural Cry
Among the works installed in the gardens of Château d’Arsac, the “I”NEED installation by Sam Dougados strikes with its minimalist power. This message, erected facing the water and vegetation, serves as a challenge. Everyone can project their own quest onto it: a need for nature, meaning, love, silence…
Placed in a natural environment, this work echoes the artist’s approach: to integrate art into the landscape, to dialogue with the elements, to evoke an intimate emotion in the viewer.
Sam Dougados transforms ephemeral spaces into lasting experiences. His art, deeply rooted in the moment and nature, questions our relationship with the world. With I NEED, he offers us a sensitive mirror, an invitation to feel, here and now.
